Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue

Smelt Mill base supports emergency response across remote terrain and operates with highly unpredictable energy usage. Periods of low demand are interrupted by sudden spikes during rescue callouts, making traditional energy strategies inefficient. As a charity reliant on fundraising, the Mountain Rescue team needed to reduce operational costs while maintaining readiness. At the same time, its location within a protected National Landscape required a solution that aligned with strict planning constraints and environmental responsibility. Following a carbon audit, on-site renewable energy generation was identified as a priority. Green Shield Group designed and installed a tailored solar PV and battery storage system to match the site’s variable energy profile. Battery storage plays a central role, enabling the site to store excess daytime generation and deploy it during peak demand or low generation periods. This ensures energy is available when needed without relying heavily on the grid. The project also required careful planning approval due to its location. Green Shield Group managed the process end-to-end, ensuring compliance while delivering a system suited to the building’s constraints.
