Mobilisation & Installation: What to Expect on Your Site

Updated on 12 March 2025

When preparing for a solar PV or renewable technology installation, understanding the mobilisation and installation process is essential. A well-organised approach ensures efficiency, safety, and minimal disruption.

Many of the finer details, including site setup, material deliveries, and scheduling, will have already been covered in your pre-start meeting. Here, we focus on what happens when work begins on-site, giving you a practical overview of each stage.

Scaffold erection: setting the foundation for safety and access #

The first visible sign of progress on your site is scaffolding going up. This provides safe access for the installation team and ensures work can be carried out efficiently. While scaffolding might not be the most exciting part of the process, it is one of the most important.

A team of professional scaffolders will arrive to set up secure platforms around key work areas. Once in place, the structure is carefully inspected and signed off before use. Depending on the size and complexity of your project, this can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day.

Why it matters
  •  Creates a safe working environment, particularly for rooftop installations.
  • Protects both the property and the team by enabling controlled movement.
  • Ensures compliance with health and safety regulations.

Site setup and personnel on site #

Once scaffolding is in place, the site is given a final check to ensure everything is in order before installation begins.

Who will be on site?

  • Installation engineers who manage the setup and fitting of solar panels.
  • Electricians responsible for the system’s wiring and integration.
  • Project managers or site supervisors overseeing progress and quality control.
  • Safety officers conducting routine checks to maintain compliance.

Knowing who is on-site helps keep communication clear and ensures the project stays on track.

Key considerations

  • Work areas are clearly marked, and secure storage is arranged for equipment and materials.
  • Any remaining health and safety measures are put in place, such as signage and barriers.
  • Welfare facilities, including break areas and restrooms, are confirmed for the team.

Delivery of equipment and special access considerations #

Larger equipment, such as cranes and Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWPs), plays a key role in lifting and positioning solar panels safely. In some cases, arranging access for this equipment requires additional planning.

If your site has restricted access, we will have already discussed this during the pre-start meeting to ensure everything runs smoothly on the day.

What to expect
  • Scheduled deliveries are planned to prevent congestion on-site.
  • Special access considerations may be needed, such as temporary road closures or alternative entry points. In some cases, permits may be required to operate cranes or MEWPs in public or shared spaces.
  • Safety checks are carried out before the equipment is used.

Delivery of materials #

With the right equipment in place, the next step is getting all necessary materials on-site. These include solar panels, inverters, mounting structures, and cabling.

At this stage, efficiency is key. Having the right materials in place at the right time helps keep the installation moving forward without unnecessary delays.

How this Is managed
  • Deliveries are coordinated to arrive in stages, reducing on-site storage challenges.
  • Each delivery is checked for accuracy and quality before installation begins.
  • Materials are stored securely to prevent damage or theft.

Installation: bringing your solar pv system to life #

With everything in place, the installation process begins. This is where the project truly takes shape, with panels being mounted, electrical components connected, and the system integrated into your existing power supply.

Step 1: Mounting the Solar Panels

Roof or ground structure preparation: Ensuring surfaces are ready for panel installation.

Mounting frame installation: The structural framework is securely fixed in place.

Solar panel positioning & securing: Panels are carefully aligned and attached to the framework.

Step 2: Electrical System Installation

Inverter placement: The inverter (which converts DC electricity to AC) is installed in a designated location.

Cable routing & connections: Electrical wiring is safely laid out and connected to the system.

Earthing & safety measures: Proper grounding techniques are applied to prevent electrical hazards.

Step 3: System Integration & Testing

Connecting the solar system to the existing power supply.

Performing system diagnostics to ensure proper operation.

Verifying compliance with safety and electrical standards.

This stage varies in duration depending on system size, but regular updates will keep you informed on progress.

Organised shutdown (if required) #

For some installations, a temporary power shutdown may be necessary to safely integrate the new solar PV system into your electrical supply. If this applies to your project, it will have been planned well in advance.

Not all installations require a shutdown, but if one is needed, it will be carefully coordinated to ensure minimal impact.

Managing the process
  • You will receive notice ahead of time so you can prepare.
  • The shutdown will be scheduled at a time that minimises business disruption.
  • Engineers will work efficiently to restore power as quickly as possible.
  • Once completed, the system will undergo final checks before being brought online.

Weekly updates: keeping you in the loop #

Communication is a priority throughout the project. You will receive regular updates covering:

  • Progress and key milestones.
  • Any scheduling changes or challenges that arise.
  • Health and safety updates.
  • The next steps in the process.

These updates help ensure transparency and allow you to plan accordingly.

Delivering success #

Installing a solar PV system is a structured process, with each step carefully planned to ensure efficiency and safety. While the pre-start meeting covers many of the finer details, understanding what happens on-site provides valuable insight into how your project will unfold.

By working with an experienced installation team, you can expect a well-organised approach that keeps disruptions to a minimum while delivering a high-quality renewable energy system.
