Smart Export Guarantee (SEG): What is it And How Does it Work?

Updated on 1 July 2026

The UK Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a pivotal initiative designed to encourage the adoption of renewable energy by ensuring that small-scale generators are compensated for the surplus electricity they export to the national grid. This resource delves into the intricacies of the SEG, offering insights into how it operates, the prevailing tariff rates, and considerations for businesses contemplating renewable energy investments.

What is the smart export guarantee (SEG)? #

Launched in January 2020, the SEG mandates that licensed electricity suppliers offer payments to small-scale renewable energy producers for the excess electricity they feed into the grid. This scheme replaced the previous Feed-in Tariff (FiT) program, shifting the focus solely to the exported electricity rather than both generation and export.

How does the SEG work?

Under the SEG, eligible renewable energy generators, such as those utilising solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, wind turbines, or hydroelectric systems, can receive payments from electricity suppliers for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity exported to the grid. The rates and terms are determined by individual suppliers, leading to a competitive market where businesses can select the most favorable tariff.

Eligibility Criteria

To participate in the SEG, businesses must ensure:

  • Certification: Their renewable energy installation is certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) or an equivalent standard.

  • Capacity: The system has a total installed capacity of up to 5 megawatts (MW).

  • Metering: A smart meter or equivalent metering system is in place to accurately record the electricity exported to the grid.

Current SEG tariff rates #

SEG tariff rates aren’t set by government, each licensed supplier determines its own export price, and these are reviewed periodically (typically with around 30 days’ notice), so rates move with wholesale power prices and competitive pressure.

For commercial-scale exporters, standard rates generally sit in the region of 3–8p per kWh, with the highest published rates, sometimes into the low teens, usually reserved for businesses that also take their electricity supply from the same provider, or that operate half-hourly export metering. Independent export agreements and PPAs can offer fixed rates over 12–36 month terms, providing more revenue certainty than a variable SEG tariff alone.

Because rates vary by supplier, contract type and site profile, and change frequently, we’d always recommend confirming a live, site-specific export quote rather than relying on a published headline figure.

Benefits of the SEG for Businesses
  • Financial Incentives: Businesses can monetise surplus electricity, creating an additional revenue stream.

  • Environmental Responsibility: Participating in the SEG underscores a company’s commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions.

  • Energy Independence: Generating renewable energy can reduce reliance on external power sources, enhancing energy security.

Challenges and considerations #

While the SEG offers notable benefits, there are challenges and considerations to keep in mind:

  • Variability in Tariff Rates: The significant variation in rates among suppliers necessitates careful comparison to ensure optimal returns.

  • Contract Terms and Conditions: Some suppliers offer higher SEG rates but require participants to also purchase their electricity from the same supplier. This condition can limit the generator’s flexibility in choosing competitive import energy tariffs, potentially offsetting the financial benefits of higher SEG rates.
  • Market Fluctuations: SEG rates are not fixed by the government, meaning they are subject to changes based on market dynamics. Generators should regularly review available tariffs to ensure they receive the best possible rate.

  • Administrative Requirements: The application process for the SEG can involve paperwork, meter installations, and compliance with technical standards. Generators must ensure that their system is certified and their smart meter is properly installed and functioning.

Considerations Before Oversizing Installations

While the SEG offers attractive incentives, it’s crucial for businesses to assess the practicality of oversizing their renewable energy installations:

  • Return on Investment (ROI): Oversized systems may lead to higher initial costs without a proportional increase in financial returns, especially if the excess energy cannot be effectively utilised or exported at favorable rates.

  • Grid Constraints: Local grid infrastructure may have limitations on the amount of electricity that can be exported, potentially curtailing the benefits of larger systems.

  • Future Policy Changes: Energy policies and tariff rates are subject to change. Over-reliance on current SEG rates may pose financial risks if future rates are less favorable.

Future outlook of the SEG #

The SEG is expected to evolve in the coming years as the UK government continues its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Potential developments include:

  • Higher SEG Rates: Growing demand for renewable energy may prompt suppliers to offer more competitive rates to attract generators.

  • Battery Storage Integration: Operators with battery storage systems may receive higher rates for exporting stored electricity during peak demand periods.

  • Dynamic Pricing Models: Time-of-use tariffs and dynamic pricing models could become more widespread, rewarding generators for exporting electricity when demand is highest.

How to apply for the SEG #

Applying for the SEG involves several straightforward steps:

  1. Choose a Supplier: Research and compare SEG rates from various suppliers to select the best offer.

  2. Check Eligibility: Ensure that your renewable energy system meets the eligibility requirements, including certification under the MCS or an equivalent standard. Read more on how to apply here.

  3. Install a Smart Meter: If not already installed, arrange for a smart meter capable of recording half-hourly export data.

  4. Submit an Application: Contact your chosen SEG supplier to submit an application. This typically involves providing:

    • Installation certificate
    • Proof of identity
    • Bank details for payment
    • Evidence of system installation

  5. Export and Get Paid: Once your application is approved, your supplier will begin making payments based on the electricity you export.

Challenges and risks in estimating ROI #

1
Uncertain Energy Prices and Market Conditions

Wholesale electricity price fluctuations impact ROI, particularly for battery storage and long term predictions.

Policy changes may alter SEG rates and government incentives, both positively and negatively.

Common sense analysis of current contract pricing – business who signed contracts during specific periods of time can be tied to excessively high energy rates, not representative of future pricing.

2
Regulatory Changes and Policy Shifts

Government subsidies and tax relief schemes may change over time.

Inclusion of any export payments should be taken with caution as changes can happen fast and drastically as demonstrated with the removal and replacement of the FIT tariff.

ROI projections should, where applicable, include risk assessments for future policy adjustments.

3
Technological Advancements Affecting System Efficiency

New technologies may improve efficiency but reduce the long-term value of existing installations.

Performance degradation (e.g., 1–2% per year) should be factored into ROI calculations where applicable for certain technologies.

Need expert advice on SEG? Let’s talk. #

The Smart Export Guarantee represents a significant advancement in promoting renewable energy adoption among UK businesses. It provides a structured mechanism for compensating surplus electricity, thereby enhancing the financial viability of renewable energy projects.

However, while the SEG offers valuable incentives, it may not justify the oversizing of installations beyond the immediate energy needs of a business. A balanced approach, aligning system capacity with consumption patterns and export potential, is essential to optimise both environmental benefits and financial returns.
