Green Shield Group has launched a significant solar rollout across the M6 Toll, one of the busiest motorways in the West Midlands and the UK’s only tolled route. The project is a key step in helping Midlands Expressway Ltd reduce operational emissions and improve energy efficiency across the motorway's infrastructure.
M6 Toll Solar Project Launch and Initial Sites
Phase One of the installation is now complete, starting with three key sites: Great Wyrley, Weeford Park, and the M6 Toll operating centre. These locations will form the backbone of the network, with additional sites at Langley, Shenstone, and Burntwood to follow in Phase Two.
Upon completion, the combined systems will generate 480 kWp of solar power, meeting the annual electricity needs of approximately 150 homes. For Midlands Expressway, this will reduce grid dependency by 20%, ease demand on the national network, and enhance the road’s long-term energy resilience.
Reducing Carbon Emissions Along the Route
In addition to cost and efficiency benefits, the M6 Toll solar project will deliver significant environmental gains. The completed solar network is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by over 80,000 kg annually, equivalent to planting 3,500 trees each year.
For an organisation managing a 27-mile transport corridor used by thousands daily, these savings highlight the important role major infrastructure plays in achieving decarbonisation targets.
Addressing Challenges and Building Momentum
Large-scale solar projects present several complexities. Grid-connection constraints and varied site conditions required both teams to address technical and logistical challenges before construction began.
Chris Ridehalgh, Operations Director at Green Shield Group, explains:
“We’re pleased to see the first M6 Toll solar installations now underway. A lot of careful planning has gone into aligning the design with Midlands Expressway’s long-term vision for the route. This project shows how core transport networks can integrate renewable energy in a practical, meaningful way.”
Contributing to Low-Carbon Infrastructure
The M6 Toll solar rollout expands Green Shield Group’s portfolio of projects that support organisations in reducing emissions. Recent initiatives include energy and carbon-reduction schemes for Boeing, Starbucks, Hilton, and BMW.
For Midlands Expressway, the solar programme provides a foundation for future sustainability initiatives, supporting efficient operations and reducing the M6 Toll’s environmental footprint.
