Deeside Cereals has been quietly fuelling mornings across the UK and beyond for decades, producing private-label cereals and cereal bars for major retailers. But beyond the oats and crunch, the Flintshire-based business is making equally bold moves in sustainability. Known for responsible production and a culture of continuous improvement, Deeside Cereals recently turned its attention to transport, installing a new electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at its manufacturing site as part of a growing commitment to greener operations.
A sustainability strategy that’s more than just a tick-box
Long before EV chargers arrived on-site, Deeside Cereals had already earned its sustainability stripes. The company’s approach is practical, measurable, and woven into its day-to-day operations:
- Zero waste to landfill: A milestone reached in 2015, with an impressive 98.9% of waste now recycled and validated independently by Valpak.
- Innovative water treatment: With Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) and Landia AirJet systems in place, wastewater compliance is sorted, and COD levels are down by over 90%.
- Sustainable packaging: Every pack is recyclable, and the team continually seeks to reduce materials and emissions without compromising quality.
- Boots with purpose: Disused safety footwear is collected, recycled, and sent overseas, reducing waste and doing some good along the way.
- Bigger picture thinking: With a long-term vision to become a fully self-sustainable manufacturing site, this is a company that thinks ahead.
The decision to install EV charging was a natural next step, both as a practical upgrade and a visible commitment to cleaner, smarter transport.
Rolling out the EV solution
Green Shield Group partnered with Deeside Cereals to deliver a tailored EV charging solution that fits the site’s needs today and tomorrow.
The project included:
- 5 x 7.4kW twin-socket EVEC pedestal chargers
- 4 x 22kW twin-socket EVEC pedestal chargers
- Complete installation, commissioning, and a three-year site management service
- App-controlled charging, LED lighting for visibility, and easy-to-manage payment options via Monta
Everything is OCPP-compliant (tech speak for “compatible with pretty much any electric vehicle”) and built for reliability with a user-friendly interface that doesn’t require a degree in electrical engineering.
Why the switch to electric made sense
Making the move to EV infrastructure isn’t just good for the environment; it’s innovative business. Here’s what Deeside Cereals stands to gain:
Lower running costs
Electric vehicles are around 49% cheaper to run than their diesel counterparts. And with fewer moving parts, maintenance is more straightforward, more affordable, and far less likely to cause Monday morning surprises.
Less Carbon, more credibility
Installing EV chargers helps reduce Scope 1 emissions and supports the company’s journey toward energy self-sufficiency, demonstrating action rather than just ambition.
A better experience for staff and visitors
With on-site workplace charging, electric vehicle (EV) ownership becomes a more viable option for employees. It also gives visitors and suppliers peace of mind upon arrival and helps the company stay ahead of incoming net-zero targets.
A brand boost
When customers, partners, and employees see EV chargers on-site, it sends a clear message: Deeside Cereals is investing in the future. It strengthens ESG credentials and supports long-term brand trust.
A futureproof investment
Deeside Cereals’ EV charging installation is more than a box-ticking exercise. It’s a practical, forward-thinking step that aligns with their broader sustainability strategy and shows what happens when operational efficiency meets environmental ambition.
As the UK transitions to electric transport, Deeside isn’t waiting to play catch-up. They’ve taken the wheel early and are leading by example in a sector where sustainability is becoming a key ingredient in every decision.
